Founder, Chairman and Chief Technology Advisor of IDS Scheer AG

Short profile:
Dr. August-Wilhelm Scheer, born in 1941, founded the firm known today as IDS Scheer AG in 1984. Since the IPO in 1999, he is chairman of the Supervisory Board as well as principal shareholder of the company. In 1975, Prof. Scheer held one of the first chairs for Information Systems and established the Institute for Information Systems (IWi) at the University of the Saarland. The focus of his research activities is on information and business process management in industry, the services sector and in administration. His publications, translated into 8 languages, gained worldwide attention. In April 2005, Professor Scheer gave up his 30-year position as Director of the Institute for Information Systems (IWi), although he remains closely associated to the Institute’s technology and research activities.
In 2003, he received the Phillip Morris Research Prize and was named Entrepreneur of the Year. Since October 2004, he is a member of the Governing Board of the Fraunhofer Institute. He was also appointed member of the Presidium of the German Federal Association for Information Economy, Telecommunications, and New Media (BITKOM). In September 2005, the German Society for Information Technology (GI) [Gesellschaft für Informatik] named Dr. August-Wilhelm Scheer a “GI Fellow” as an outstanding public figure. In December 2005, he received the renown prize from the Erich Gutenberg Labor Commission and in the same month was awarded the German Federal Service Cross, First Class.
Since 2006, he has been a member of the council for innovation and growth of the Federal Government. 2007 he was honored as a HPI-Fellow by the Hasso-Plattner-Institut (HPI) für Softwaresystemtechnik and was elected President of the German Association for Information Technology, Telecommunications and New Media.
