ARIS for Microsoft BizTalk

Business Process Management Excellence with ARIS SOA Architect and Microsoft BizTalk

ARIS for Microsoft BizTalk offers companies seamless integration between business and technical BPM. After quick and easy modeling in ARIS SOA Architect, a process can be exported at the push of a button as a Microsoft Visual Studio BizTalk project.

Microsoft BizTalk Server allows users to define technical business processes (i.e., “orchestrations”) and make them available as Web services that can be called as desired. Orchestrations are typically implemented by software engineers in accordance with requirements defined by operational departments. Unfortunately, information is often lost somewhere along the line, which has a negative impact on subsequent process execution. ARIS for Microsoft BizTalk supports cooperation between operational and IT departments at this crucial point. Non-technical staff model their processes in the intuitive ARIS environment, while IT employees work in the same environment to create technical processes that reflect the business workflows. Thanks to shared use of the central ARIS repository, misunderstandings can be avoided.

Two key methods of transforming a business process into an executable process are supported:

  • When using an event-driven process chain (EPC) to describe the process flow in graphical form, the process model can be enriched with SOA-relevant aspects, such as calls to Web services or input/output data. Automated model transformation functionality enables a technical BPEL model to be created from the EPC. The model can be enhanced as required (e.g., copying of data).
  • Alternatively, if Business Process Modeling Notation (BPMN) is the preferred method, a business process diagram can be used to model the process flow and technical details (e.g., sending messages, branch conditions).

When the BPEL or BPMN model is complete, ARIS for Microsoft BizTalk automatically generates a Microsoft Visual Studio project, which can be edited by IT staff. This tight integration between ARIS SOA Architect and the Microsoft BizTalk environment boosts IT department productivity, saving time and money when implementing processes.

Your benefits:

  • Fast, intuitive modeling of business processes in EPC and BPMN.
  • BizTalk-specific model validations ensure successful transformation of a BPEL or BPMN model into a BizTalk orchestration.
  • Automated transformation of EPC models to BPEL, as well as export of BPEL or BPMN as a Visual Studio project for BizTalk.
  • Optional integration with ARIS Process Performance Manager for ongoing process monitoring.

Automatic transformation from EPC to BPEL

Having been enriched with SOA-relevant aspects, the EPC is now sufficiently detailed for automatic transformation into a technical process in BPEL format.

BPMN is an internationally standardized business process modeling notation that can, within certain constraints, also be used to define technical details, like with BPEL.

Because the Visual Studio project generated automatically when exporting contains all modeled artifacts, including message variables, ports, and process flow of the orchestration, the amount of editing work to be done by BizTalk experts is minimal.
